A fresh software image, comprising the entire collection of standard classroom software, is installed on classroom computers each semester. The initial installation is made one week after end of classes, and is subject to testing and modification during semester breaks. The final image is in place two weeks before the start of classes. In order to provide a consistent computing environment to instructors, the image will not be changed during the semester.

Decisions on which software packages to include in the standard image are based on 

• History of high use. Little-used classroom software may be deleted from future image
• Appropriateness for classroom demonstration
• Expectation of general use across departments
• Cost and licensing restrictions
