TILE classrooms are instructional spaces configured for student-centered, active learning pedagogies. The various whiteboards and flexible seating options in these classrooms provides a collaborative atmosphere for inquiry-guided learning. Classroom Scheduling manages several active learning TILE classrooms on campus which range in size from 24 to 81 seats.  Several of these rooms offer round tables that seat nine students, with three computers at each table. These technology-rich “classic” TILE rooms provide central switching stations that faculty members and students can use to project images from classroom laptops to LCD screens, one for each table. The rooms also are lined with glass white-boards for teams of students to use when collaborating.  

In addition, we offer two other variations of learning spaces called TILE-Flex and TILE-Lite rooms. TILE-Flex classrooms provide different student ratios with a flexible switch between individual and group work. Further, a variation of TILE-Flex, called TILE-Flex-Plus additionally provide laptops. TILE-Lite is our newest branding of space that is technology light (no provided laptops, additional monitors, or equipment to project students' own devices). This unique classroom does not use tables, and instead has movable tablet-arm chairs that cluster around power pods to form groups, enabling different active-learning teaching and learning.

Faculty and other users must become TILE enabled in order to request to use the TILE and TILE-Flex classroom spaces (this training is not required for TILE-Lite spaces, however). Contact the Center for Teaching in the Office of Teaching, Learning, and Technology at tile@uiowa.edu for additional information on the TILE program or if you are interested in becoming trained to use the TILE spaces.
