Your Monthly Guide to Smarter Scheduling
June 2026
It's Finally Summer!
We have settled into the summer term and campus has taken on a quieter rhythm, offering a welcome pause from the intensity of the academic year. While this time is typically less hectic, important scheduling work continues behind the scenes: getting the university classrooms into pristine shape for the return of students, welcoming the incoming freshman class during orientation events, and preparing for key fall deadlines and submission periods. In this issue, you’ll find essential reminders, key dates, and resources to help keep your scheduling processes running smoothly during this steady and productive time.

Policy and Procedure Spotlight
Instructor Classroom Needs
Priority Furniture
Please ensure that any instructor priority furniture needs for accommodation purposes are communicated to our office in advance of the start of each semester.
Room Preferences
When setting up section offerings in MAUI Planner, departments can indicate specific classroom (room and building) they would like to have, request TILE space, include text regarding back-to-back instructors or any special accommodations that are needed, such as arrangements for instructors with special needs so Classroom Scheduling can attempt to accommodate their requests.
Reminder - TILE Changes
Beginning fall 2026, the University of Iowa will implement updates to TILE classrooms to simplify room terminology and align classroom technology resources with current student device use patterns. Key points include:
- TILE names will be combined into a single category
- Laptops will be removed from TILE classrooms
- 40 SH will be designated as a full TILE classroom and TILE-enablement consultations with the Office of Teaching, Learning, and Technology will be required for room use
Details about the naming changes, removal of laptops, and answers to frequently asked questions can be found on the TILE Updates page.
Scheduling Insights
Department Event Reservations
Fall semester departmental events can be submitted beginning July 1. Please do not submit any requests in advance of this date.
Requestors must complete the Department Event Request Form to reserve a University Classroom. Events are processed on a first-come, first-served basis with careful consideration to event date and time sensitivity.
As-Is Classroom Use Policy
Rooms are reserved as-is, and no additional furniture or services will be provided. Any coordination for extended needs, such as AV support or furniture adjustments, must be arranged directly by the end user.
Reports and Reminders
REPORTS:0101
Six new reports have been created to assist department administrators with class allocations:
- Allocation by Offering Unit: Allocation by Offering Unit and session.
- Allocation by Course: Allocation by course and session.
- Allocation by Offering College: Allocation by college and session.
- Allocation by Offering Unit & Time Period: Allocation by Offering Unit and session with a breakout by allocation Time Period.
- Allocation by Offering Unit & Time Period & Day of Week: Allocation by Offering Unit and session with a breakout by allocation Time Period and day of week.
- Allocation by Course & Time Period & Day of Week (Deep Dive): Allocation by course and session with time period and day of week detail. This report presents course scheduling in a matrix format. Each row represents a specific course section, while the columns represent time blocks broken out by day of the week (Monday-Friday). The filled cells (with values like 1.0 or 0.5) indicate when a course occupies a specific time slot, allowing you to quickly see scheduling patterns, overlaps, and gaps across the week.
Facilities & Tech Updates
70 VAN
Renovation work has begun for room 70 in Van Allen Hall. While Van Allen Hall, built in 1964, has seen many updates over the years, room 70 has remained largely unchanged. This project will transform the space by reorienting the room layout, installing modern furnishings with ADA-compliant seating, and upgrading technology, writing surfaces, flooring, paint, and HVAC systems.
Offline Classrooms
101 BBE is offline for summer session 2026 due to steam tunnel updates occurring in the courtyard between Van Allen Hall and Biology Building East.
106 GILH will be offline through early summer 2028 during construction of the Tippie College of Business addition that will connect Pappajohn Business Building and Gilmore Hall.

Pet of the Month
Meet Mary's pup, Phenix, our resident “yard supervisor.” Phenix prefers a full schedule of naps, treats, and high-priority squirrel patrol over any office duties. When it comes to productivity, this pup proves that chasing squirrels and maximizing snack breaks is the real full-time job!
